An Appeal for Grace in Uganda

We have had appeals before in Redland Meeting for Grace Kiconco Sirrah’s work in prisons and reconciliation in Uganda. Because of Covid-19, Grace can no longer go into prisons or work with communities face-to-face, but could keep the work going remotely if she had a working computer. She has been using WhatsApp on her phone to send messages to prisoners, but says with a computer she could do a lot of training in the community. She provides training in conflict resolution, anger management, gender and development, and self esteem, according to need. This is for ex-prisoners, prisoners’ families and some youth and women’s groups in the community. She has researched computers locally and says she can get a good one second-hand for £250-350.

I contacted Computers4Africa, which provided a computer for her many years ago, but they are now Computers4Charity, focused exclusively on UK work. And Uganda apparently has a new law prohibiting the import of second-hand computers! Redland Meeting Appeals can only appeal for registered charities, not individuals, so the only way we can help is for people to send me a cheque made out to me (or a bank transfer – please ask for the details), and I will send her the money raised.

I hope we can support Grace in this way.

Thanks
Marian Liebmann

For Ethiopia

This is Worki, one of the girls who have been helped by For Ethiopia to obtain an education and avoid the medical and social perils of early marriage.

For Ethiopia is a small, Bristol based charity set up in 2004. We work directly with a community in rural Ethiopia helping them with the things they need, and ask for –clean water, improved health facilities and education, especially for the girls. Many girls, even the lucky ones, are unable to proceed beyond primary school and their health is often at risk from poor medical and childbirth facilities as well as lack of opportunities to reach their full potential and contribute to society. Every penny we raise goes to them directly via a partner charity, properly constituted in Ethiopia, FDA-E (For Development Association Ethiopia)

Coming from a background of General practice (I was a GP) my main interest is in primary care. The area we cover is the size of North Gloucestershire, with a population of around 100,000. It is served by 4 Health Centres and 27 rural health posts. Over the years, we have provided basic equipment for each of the health posts, solar vaccine fridges, and, over the past 3 years we have run a campaign, Women and Children First, to upgrade the delivery suites in the 4 Health Centres.

As with many small charities, our 2020 plans have been stalled by COVID. We have diverted a large proportion of our medical budget to support their COVID response, providing PPE and food. The High School has closed, and the 36 girls that we support have returned to their villages. Apart from the hiatus in their education, this leaves them exposed to the risk of pregnancy and/or early marriage. Under these circumstances, we are trying to equip each student with a solar charged smart phone, so that they can tap into Government-provided learning programmes, but also that they can communicate with their tutors and be safe.

I would like to thank Redland Quaker Meeting for their vision  in looking beyond the problems in the UK , to assist a poor Ethiopian Community with few of the advantages that we enjoy.

Helping hungry children

The Sunday Appeal on 21 June was for hungry children in Uganda, particularly hit when the coronavirus pandemic meant their school – which was providing food as well as learning – was closed.

This photo shows the children in happier times with mugs of porridge that helped them through the school day.

If you still want to help these hungry children, please go to https://www.justgiving.com/crowdfunding/judith-atkinson?utm_id=2&utm_term=mWN3e6KvV

If you unable to donate online, please contact me and we’ll use another way.

Cotham and Redland Welcome

Cotham and Redland Welcome is a group made up from local people and organisations wanting to have a positive impact on the refugee crisis caused by the endless Syrian war. Around half the Syrian population has been displaced, and hundreds of thousands are living in refugee camps in neighbouring countries. The UK government has decided to allow a meagre total of 20,000 Syrian refugees into Britain over five years. Over 300 Syrians have already settled in Bristol, with support from the City Council and from local community sponsorship groups.

Cotham and Redland Welcome (CRW) is part of the Home Office’s Community Sponsorship Scheme (www.sponsorrefugees.org ). Redland Quaker Meeting has been represented on the CRW planning group from the start, initially by John and Hilary Mayne and myself. We felt this was a good way to get to know our neighbours, as well as to help refugees. The aim of the group is to welcome and support one displaced Syrian family to make their home in our local community. This involves finding suitable accommodation, furnishing and decorating it, and providing day to day support including access to social, educational and medical services for at least two years.

We are working closely with the charity Citizens UK (www.citizensuk.org), which has much experience of community sponsorship. With the benefit of their advice, our group has made good progress towards meeting Home Office requirements, and we are confident that we shall be ready to receive a Syrian family during 2020. One requirement is fundraising to help provide support and stability for the newly arrived family. The minimum target is £9,000, but we hope to raise £15,000. There will be an appeal for Cotham and Redland Welcome after Meeting for Worship on 22 December.

During November we received some very exciting news. Our efforts to find suitable housing have been successful, due to the generosity of a successful local person working in the film and television industry. We have a house! What we now need is practical support of various kinds, in addition to completion of our fundraising. Please consider whether you might be able to help this worthwhile local project as it moves forward into 2020.

Here is what is needed:

  • At least one more Redland Quaker to join the Cotham and Redland Welcome planning group
  • Financial giving and voluntary effort towards furnishing and redecorating the house
  • Offers of furniture and other household goods to turn the house into a welcoming home
  • Offers of friendly assistance and hospitality for the Syrian family after their arrival (including help with English language and childcare, as well as with general orientation, employment,  leisure activities and access to local services)

Please contact Julia Bush if you would like to get involved in helping a refugee family – at the same time helping Redland Meeting to be a good neighbour. All offers gratefully received!
